This is a review of the functional and applied anatomy of the masticatory system. It aims to add to basic descriptive anatomy works, and provide a comprehensive understanding of the anatomical basis of adult mandibular movement and its relationship to dental occlusions. The two chief aspects of the topic are the musculature attached to the mandible and the pivoting and guiding activity of the craniomandibular articulation. The fundamentals of joint structure and function are dealt with separately.
