This anthology reveals the long and bloody history of women getting the vote. Drawing on extracts from diaries, newspapers, letters, journals and books, the story is pieced together using the voices of the women themselves, showing the passion and bravery in their "unladylike" behaviour. Joyce Marlow has sought to go beyond the obvious, particularly beyond London, to show the ordinary women - middle and working class - who had the courage to stand up and be counted; and just as likely hectored or pelted with eggs.
