Tied to a six-part BBC1 television series, this book focuses on a corps of the Army which is not its most popular branch, and has evolved as a separate, self-reliant group, content that the man in the street knows very little about them. Now, opening their doors to the outside world, the Royal Military Police show who they are, how they operate, and how they compare with the civilian police force. The book follows the progress of selected cases from the time the duty room receives a call, through to the solving of the crime and the punishment of the soldier involved. It explores the "policing" side of their duties, as well as the detective work which is carried out by the Special Investigation Branch, often dealing with violent crimes such as assault, rape, murder and suicide. Readers learn of the RMP's investigations of white-collar fraud in the Army, their processing of allegations against the Army in Northern Ireland, and how they deal with life under fire and in the face of war atrocities.
