The Suez crisis of 1956, sparked by Egypt's nationalization of the Suez Canal Company, led to the resignation of a Prime Minister, ended British dominance in the Middle East and threatened to destroy the Anglo-American "alliance". This book includes recently released American, British and Israeli documents and interviews with participants of the Suez crisis using this information to recreate a tale of diplomatic manoeuvring, military planning, Middle Eastern intrigues, conspiracies and blunders. The result is a study not only of nations and power politics but also of personalities: the friction between Anthony Eden and John Foster Dulles; the travails of a Prime Minister, under pressure from the press and uneasy with his senior colleagues; the efforts of Foreign Office and State Department officials to save the Anglo-American relationship by overthrowing the Egyptian Government; the domination of American policy by the Dulles brothers, who were given free reign by President Eisenhower to intervene in other countries throughout the world.
