The 49 papers in this volume originate from many different parts of the world and were selected to represent the wide range of contributions dealing with the nature, assessment, prevention and treatment of psychological dysfunction. The latest work by leading international researchers in clinical and abnormal psychology is described in this volume. There is a broad coverage of clinical areas. The papers are organised into six sections based on the type of dysfunction. The first section is concerned with emotional disorders, including papers which discuss the advances in the definition and treatment of specific disorders within general categories such as anxiety, stress and depression, but which also acknowledge the communality between these emotional systems. The papers in the second section deal with deficits in self-regulation, such as alcohol abuse, smoking and eating disorders. One of the many themes linking analysis of these "appetitive" disturbances is the notion of loss of control, and its relation to long-term regulation of intake.
