Federico del Sagrado Corazon de Jesus Garcia Lorca (1898-1936) was a Spanish poet, playwright and theatre director. Widely associated with the Generation of '27 and the artists who dwelt in the same circles, Lorca rose to fame with his Gypsy Ballads (Romancero gitano), poems depicting life in Andalucia, his part of Spain. Lorca was homosexual, and was an outspoken socialist, and he was assassinated by Nationalist forces at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War. Despite dying aged just 38, he left behind a substantial bibliography, and his legacy as one of Spain's foremost writers, and as a major icon of the international LGBTQ+ community, shows no sign of waning.
