A company can be investigated by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) for a range of civil and criminal actions. An investigation into the affairs of a company or an aspect of those affairs can have far reaching implications. In 1995-1996, there were 3151 requests for DTI consideration of which 1341 were accepted for formal consideration. There were over 400 investigations under the Companies Acts and under section 44 of the Insurance Companies Act 1982 in the same period. This volume covers those involved in the company investigation system, whether as investigators appointed by the DTI or acting for witnesses to an investigation. Further, the book places these statutory investigations into their public law context.
