Rook and pawn endings are of immense practical importance to the competitive chess player. This book is a player's guide to rook endings. It begins with a thorough analysis of the fundamental winning and drawing positions in which one side has an extra pawn and progresses to more complex positions where each side has pawns. Vasily Smyslov won the World Chamionship in 1957 and was a world title candidate finalist as recently as 1984. Grigory Levenfish was an international Grandmaster and twice champion of the USSR.
