This aims to provide a detailed, yet practical manual on the treatment of paediatric fractures. It is designed to help the clinician avoid complications and provide state-of-the-art care. It addresses complications that in children with fractures including prevention and instructions for the acute management of these complications. Special attention is given to the effects of trauma on the child, with one chapter devoted to multiple trauma in the paediatric age group. There is also a chapter on radiologic diagnosis and pitfalls in the interpretation of the radiographs, because the interpretation of children's fractures is often difficult. Included is a special section on complications which highlights general complications, post-traumatic epiphyseal arrest, reflux sympathetic dystrophy, compartment syndrome and fat embolism. The text reviews problems occurring more often in the 1990's like gun shot fractures, seatbelt fractures, degloving injuries, and compartment syndrome. Chapters are focused on certain fractures, allowing each chapter to stand alone and information easy to access.
It features a special section on specific paediatric conditions that result in fractures from child abuse, stress, birth, severe disability, and myelomeningocele osteogenesis imperfecta. The appendix consists of a chapter on a simple method of computer indexing of fractures.
