Principles and Practice of Palliative Care and Supportive Oncology , 28-JAN-07, Volume 2414, Issue 297, Vincent T. De Vita, Jr, MD -- "I like textbooks. I believe that if they are done well, they play an important role in advancing a field and translating advances into clinical practice, which is often underestimated. They can serve as a foundation stone and a launching pad." "The comment by Dr. De Vita is certainly applicable to the comprehensive, inclusive, and well-written third edition of Principles and Practice of Palliative Care and Supportive Oncology. It is an impressive work encompassing a well done (and rarely attempted) integration of core knowledge in palliative care and supportive oncology. One hundred forty authors, experts in their field, and many new figures contributed to this current edition. The textbook addresses the major issues in palliative care and oncology but also extends its content to special populations (pediatric, geriatric, human immunodeficiency virus, and intensive care). This new edition underwent a substantial face-lift, including size reduction, new cover, and more emphasis placed on management of symptoms and pathophysiology. The changes are particularly noteworthy in regards to the physical presentation, which is visually more appealing with subdivisions, shaded tables, algorithms, guidelines for decision making (eg, a decision-making algorithm for patients with refractory cancer-related pain [p 89]), and new figures and protocols (eg, protocols for the conversion from other opioids to methadone [p 50]). The textbook is much more clinical, with many tables on therapeutic management of various conditions (eg, therapy for bronchospasm [p 304] and palliative medication in renal failure [p 378]). The writing style is concise and to the point, making it a pleasure to read. The reduced size makes it easier to carry. The authors have exerted every effort to ensure that drug selection and dosage recommendation in this text translate from current guidelines and practice. Overall, the third edition of Palliative Care and Supportive Oncology remains outstanding and a leading reference compendium in a developing field of medicine. In the year of formal accreditation of Hospice and Palliative Care Medicine as a subspecialty by the American Board of Medical Specialties, with accreditation of fellowship training by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education, this textbook is sure to become an indispensable companion for those who practice, teach, or perform research in palliative care and supportive oncology. The blend of scientific knowledge with therapeutic options makes it a unique asset for every library. "
