Close Viewings is based on the assumptions that films are complex cultural products and that any critical approach benefits from a precise engagement with textual features. The first part of the book emphasizes formal analysis of narrative structure, visual motifs, colour, space, camera positions and movements, and sound. The second part concerns the cultural analysis of films and engages history, economics, race, gender, and psychoanalysis.
