Milan Kundera was born in the Czech Republic in 1929 and lived in France from 1975 until his death in 2023. In his mother tongue, he wrote, in strict order of writing, the collection of stories The Book of Laughter and Forgetting and the novels The Joke, Life Is Elsewhere, The Farewell Waltz, The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, The Unbearable Lightness of Being and Immortality. In French, the novels Slowness, Identity, Ignorance and The Festival of Insignificance; the three-act play Jacques and His Master: A Play in Homage to Denis Diderot; and four essays: The Art of the Novel, Testaments Betrayed, The Curtain and Encounter.
