This study discusses the astronomical and geological significance of asteroids. Following an historical survey of the subject, main belt asteroids and asteroid families are discussed. Observational techniques for determining surface composition, sizes and temperatures are described, along with theories for the formation and evolution of these bodies. The book concludes by summarizing the possible commercial uses of asteroids, forthcoming space missions to them, and areas of future research.
