Otto Janacek emerged as an artist in Prague in the dark years of the German protectorate. His long career as illustrator of children's books began in the early 1950s, but his parallel work as painter developed through Romantic lyricism to geometricisation and abstraction, arriving finally at the visionary paintings of his later years - a vision totally Czech, but understood worldwide.
