'Big data' sets continue to emerge from the global built environment, but how can we best use these datasets and what challenges do they present?
The growing volume of data on buildings and property markets presents an unprecedented opportunity for the real estate industry and cities to better segment markets and products, and target policies and investment in order to shift our ability to understand, measure, and improve the sustainability of the built environment.
Focusing on the implications for commercial property and energy efficiency, and making use of his unique access to data from over 30,000 global buildings, covering over 2 billion square feet, Kontokosta argues that the collection, integration, and analysis of large-scale data can shift investment behaviour and support data-driven policies to improve building resource efficiency and foster sustainable markets.
The book begins with a discussion of the emerging 'building data ecosystem', it then discusses our understanding of building characteristics and patterns, where opportunities exists and how they can be capitalized on, and what pressing challenges remain to be addressed. The book concludes with case studies from the perspectives of different stakeholders in the building data ecosystem.
