The author of this volume uses legal and literary sources to investigate private and public measures for the welfare of slaves in the western Roman Empire (1st century B.C. to-3rd century A.D.). The concept of welfare is deliberately taken to cover a broad range of topics and takes into account the all possible measures which were devised for the good of slaves in their work and their everyday lives. At the same time the study engages with central problems of Roman social history, especially with the much-disputed question of the concept of humanitas.
Stefan Koch studied history and Latin at the universities of Bonn, Mainz and Trier. He has been working on the topic of ancient slavery since his involvement in the project 'Research into ancient slavery' run by the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature. As a member of the graduate colloquium 'Slavery - Servitude and Compulsory Service - Forced Labour' at Trier he received his doctorate for this work.
