James Burnett, Lord Monboddo (1714-1799), was an eccentric Scottish judge and philosopher, author of six volumes on "The Origin and Progress of Language". Knight's volume on Monboddo and his contemporaries consists chiefly of correspondence, augmented by notes on Monboddo's manuscript remains.
