In this book the author encourages the reader to think of woody plants in the context of the garden as a whole and suggests that perennials and annuals play their part in a creative use of trees and shrubs. He reminds us that the presence of woody plants in a perfectly balanced garden is of great importance. They can convert a garden whose shape and contours are determined by the landscape to one that is shaped by plants. On the practical side, the role that climate, light and soil play are discussed. John Kelly is co-presenter of the BBC gardening programme Gardeners' World. Author of several books on gardening, including "Sowing a Better Garden", he also contributes to several gardening magazines including "Amateur Gardening" in which his weekly column appears. Since 1978 he has been Curator of the Sub-Tropical Gardens at Abbotsbury in Dorset.
