Although the design of implants and prosthesis is not yet an exact science, many biomechanical aspects can be explained quantitatively. Many advances have been made in the understanding of events at the interface between bone and implants and in developing methods for controlling these events. However, in the midst of the excitement born out of this activity, it is necessary to remember that the needs of the patient must remain paramount. It is also worth noting another as-yet unsatisfied need. Although a reasonable amount is known about the biomechanical aspects relating to abutments and bridgework ¿ above the bone ¿ , perhaps the biggest remaining challenge is to understand fully the loading limits of bone as they exist at the bone implant interface.
