In September 1994, three upper-class English rugby fanatics set off in a Land Rover from London to go to the Rugby World Cup in South Africa in May 1995. Along the way, they attempted to arrange matches with tribesmen and inculcate them with British colonial values, with little success. The book, as well as being a travelogue, analyzes the spirit of rugby, its essential Englishness, and how flimsy Old World values are in the face of the New World, professionalism and ambition.
