October 2025 marks the sixtieth anniversary of the closure
of the Rotherham trolleybus system. This book has been compiled to provide a
pictorial overview of the trolleybus system to commemorate the passing of what
many considered an environmentally friendly form of transport that served the
town for over half a century. Hopefully, this publication will jog the memory
of those who remember the trolleybuses with affection and show those too young
to have experienced trolleybuses what life was like in Rotherham when these
sleek electric vehicles were the principal form of transport in the area.
The book includes an extensive selection of photographs from
the opening of the system in 1912 until its closure fifty three years later. It
also includes a summary of the trolleybus fleet and a series of detailed maps
of the system including the former Mexborough and Swinton system which operated
joint routes with Rotherham to Conisbrough Low and Adwick Road.
