This 13th directory in the series contains abstracts of about 1240 projects in over 80 countries. The USA and the UK are the largest contributors, but Italy, Japan, China, and other countries have an increasing representation. There is still a great interest in the relationship between cancer and factors like diet, alcohol, smoking, and occupational exposures. There is increased interest in passive smoking, intervention, screening, and the role of the virus in the aetiology of cancer. Several indexes provide easy access to the Directory's information: by cancer site, general terms, investigator, type of study, chemical exposure, occupation, and country. The 1988 issue marks the beginning of a systematic review of the indexing policy, which will improve the indexes and make searches for studies fitting a particular description easier. The Directory includes lists of biological materials banks and of population-based cancer registries, and addresses, telephone and telex numbers of the principal investigators. Oncologists, epidemiologists, pathologists, biostatisticians.
