A new approach to engineering contracts, which has been designed with three key objectives: flexibility, clarity and simplicity. It also aims to promote good management. An ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers) drafting team, under the guidance of Dr Martin Barnes, has worked for four years to produce this set of consultative documents. The NEC can be used on any engineering, building or construction project in any country, on any scale, and with any type of contract relationship. The wording is in ordinary language to assist comprehension at all levels and reduce the need for lawyers. Even more importantly, every procedure has been designed to contribute to effective project management and the achievement of the employer's objectives.
