Spies and Revolutionaries

This is a fascinating study of the secret world of security intelligence agencies in New Zealand, told through many known and some not-so-well known cases of espionage. Beginning with the intrigue surrounding the 1865 murder of a missionary in Opotiki, the hysteria over early French and Russian subversives living in the country, right up to incidents which implicate the actions of modern New Zealand security services such as the Rainbow Warrior and Ahmed Zaoui. Black and white photographs accompany extracts from recently de-classified official documents and give life to these historical moments of political intrigue and blatant scandal. This is the other side of the story which goes beyond the 'official line' of the day to tell the truths which were overtly (and covertly) repressed by those in authority.
