By retracing the history of the trade union movement in 20the-century Britain from the perspective of society's marginalized members - women, disabled people, lesbians and gay men and people from black and ethnic minority communities - this book examines how previously marginalized members are becoming mainstream workers in the contemporary labour market. It is intended reading for students of political sociology and industrial relations. Combining detailed empirical research with sophisticated theoretical analysis, the book is based upon a study of self-organizing groups in UK trade unions. This material is deployed to illustrate the political philosophy of self-organization as well as the interpenetration of older class-based social movements and newer civil rights movements. Additionally, an entire chapter is devoted to methodology - it tackles the personal, ethical and political dilemmas involved in this research project as well as the broader questions concerning the relationship between critical social science and critical social movements
