Following the success of his "Tangier Diaries", John Hopkins turns his eye to a youth spent traveling around South America. After Graduating from Princeton University, Hopkins went to Peru with the intention of buying a coffee plantation. He traveled widely in the Andes and the jungle and floated down the Amazon on a balsa raft. He also took part on a number of archaeological digs, collecting pre-Columbian artifacts from the desert valleys. Hopkins returned to Peru in 1964; 1970 saw him traveling by dugout canoe through the jungle rivers of Guatemala visiting remote Mayan cities. He went up the Amazon from Belem to Manaus to Iquitos and meandered through Peru and Bolivia spending months on a cattle ranch in Paraguay. Hopkins rounds off his marathon travels with visits to Argentina and Uruguay, ending up in Bahia in north-east Brazil.
