This text is the Heritage Foundation's response to business critics, analysts, commentators and academics who assert that there is a fundamental contradiction between profit seeking and social and/or ethical responsibility. The author attacks this view by arguing that business managers and entrepreneurs have huge incentives to promote both economic and social progress, and in the real world the vast majority actually do so. By tracking the successful record of corporate involvement across a range of benchmark areas - including the revitalization of the inner city, the environment, workplace and product safety, social equality and responsibility, family values, and education reform - Hood demonstrates how companies have shown themselves to be socially responsible within a competitive, free-market economy.
