The "Bibliography of Economics 1751-1775" was originally prepared for the Cambridge University Press in 1935 and has long been out of print and scarce. The bibliography is based on the famous collections assembled by Professor H.S. Foxwell, the first of these collections now forming the Goldsmiths' Library at the University of London and the second of his collections going to Harvard University. At the time of the original publication of this bibliography, his third collections was in the course of formation. Professor Foxwell also compiled a collection of cuttings from booksellers' catalogues of the titles of works which he had not succeeded in acquiring, and this material has been supplemented and utilized in the preparation of the bibliography. Entries under each year are divided into groups, including General Economics, Agriculture and Extractive Industries, Shipping, Navigation, etc, Manufacturers, Commerce, Colonies, Finance, Transport, Social Conditions, Topography of economic interest. Extensive cross-referencing and indexes of names and titled makes entries quite simple to find. The period covered by the bibliography is considered to mark the dawn of economic science.
It was a time of intellectual ferment and great expectations; literature, art and science were thronged with brilliant practitioners; industry and agriculture were transformed; exploration proceeded apace and the foundations of the British and French colonial empires were laid.
