Surviving the Dalkon Shield IUD

This text chronicles the development of a contemporary women's social protest movement which arose in response to Robin's legal efforts to minimise its financial accountability to the women injured by its product. The author uses the events of this medical/corporate scandal to reflect on medical violence against women, the process of empowerment and women's grass-roots political activism. Throughout the book, Hicks is able to draw upon her status as an insider (she is a Dalkon Shield survivor and founder of the Dalkon Shield Information Network) and as a social scientist to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of the DSIN. The book features personal accounts of Dalkon Shield survivors, which underscore the author's conclusions regarding the need to regulate the pharmaceutical industry. Hick's analysis provides a model which should be of benefit to other victim's rights/citizen advocacy groups.
