Pharmacology for Dental Hygiene Practice

This text presents the general principles of pharmacology and those medications specifically used in dentistry. It also emphasizes the effects/concerns of those medications. The first section serves as an introduction to pharmacology and the role a dental hygienist plays in dental pharmacology. The second section reviews medications that are used in dentistry and each chapter focuses on such topics as mechanisms of action, pharmacology, dental and medical uses, and adverse reactions. Section three covers patient medications and the possible side-effects or concerns associated with drug combinations. Finally, section four reviews the treatment of medical emergencies in the dental office, substance abuse and the effect of drugs on pregnancy. The use of tables and figures as well as review questions and case studies should offer the student a well-rounded learning structure.
