In this book Dr Hauner introduces us to the geopolitical dimensions of the present crisis of Russian power in an unusual way by means of an analysis of the historical debate upon Russia's relationship to Asia, and in particular to Eurasia. It was a debate carried on with great intensity by Russian intellectuals themselves, but the best known critique in the West was that by Sir Halford Mackinder. In focusing attention upon the development of a Russian-dominated heartland in Eurasia, and in turn upon the implications of that development for the other Great Powers (especially the maritime powers), Mackinder emphasized Russia's extraordinary position as being both a European and an Asian, indeed a Pacific Ocean country. It is the conflict inherent in this "double position" that is the main subject of the book.
