Black Women in Britain

This is part of the "Women Making History" series, designed as source material for National Curriculum Key Stage 4 social history, which examines advances in the role and status of women. Visual, written and oral sources are used to question stereotypes and to highlight obstacles faced by women today and in the past. Black women have a long history of contribution to the British society and economy, despite suffering racial and sexual discrimination, but their commitment and efforts have often been ignored by the history books. This book aims to redress this omission by profiling eight women, highlighting their experiences of Britain and their struggles to overcome prejudice against themselves and against the black community as a whole. The women featured are Agatha, Jan McKenley, Claudia Jones, Amelia King, Cherry Byfield, Barbara Carter, Lauretta Ngcobo and Barbara Barlow.
