The second volume of essays on Baroque music (though Mozart's works are also covered) by the early music specialist, "Baroque Music Today" being the first. The concept of musical dialogue is central to the author's thought and essential in the music itself. The volume includes detailed analyses of major works by Monteverdi and Bach through which he illustrates how this musical dialogue could move audiences profoundly. He also describes the methods he uses to restore the emotional meaning to these great works with which he has been closely involved for many years through a study of the scores, contemporary commentary and performance.
