Research on chemoreception in fishes has grown at a remarkable rate and this growth has greatly increased our understanding of the ultrastructure and electrical properties of chemosensory organs, the biochemical aspects of stimulant molecules and receptor interactions, and the role of chemoreception in the control of behavior. This is evident from the large number of papers scattered in a wide range of journals, monographs and symposium proceedings. This volume reviews and compiles all the available information. It reviews chemoreception in fishes with particular emphasis on its significance in behavior and its environmental interactions. Four aspects are discussed in the light of recent developments in electron microscopical, electrophysiological and biochemical studies while searching for the general fundamental mechanisms of chemoreceptive transduction.
