Pulmonary Surfactant Metabolism

Describing the structure and metabolism of the components of the pulmonary surfactant system, this work discusses the regulation of synthesis of surfactant lipids and proteins by alveolar type II cells. It presents concepts and recent advances on the assembly, secretion and intra-alveolar metabolism of surfactant lipoproteins. A review of the alterations of surfactant metabolism in toxic and diseased satates is also presented.
