This study of the "education crisis" in Britain begins by examining the roots of the present education system and its development in the recent past, and describes the present structure of educational provision. The nature of primary education is outlined in the light of research on teaching styles. Developments in secondary education are examined critically, and related to the growth of inner city problems. The author also takes a look at the intake of ethnic minorities and the continuing argument over comprehensive education, while an examination of the independent sector shows how firmly it remains embedded in the class structure of British society. The book argues that government policies on higher education, particularly the cut-backs of funding to universities, are fundamentally misguided.
