Masterpieces of Renaissance and Baroque Printmaking

The 250 year period of Renaissance and Baroque printmaking in Europe was as varied and innovative as those of its sister arts of painting and sculpture. From the mid-15th century through the 17th century Europe burgeoned with artistic activity. This diversity is well-represented in these collections of woodcuts, engravings, etchings, and drypoint etchings by 65 artists working north and south of the Alps, from Germany to Italy. Highlighted are works by Albrecht Durer, Titian, Schiavone, and other Mannerist artists, and Rembrandt van Rijn and other 17th century Dutch and Flemish artists. The two collections complement each other in their representation of these artists' major graphic contributions to the history of printmaking and connoisseurship. The catalogue's 85 entries reveal the significance and idiosyncracies of each print, in many cases contributing new scholarship to their study. Illustrations support the entries, as often as possible, in the actual size of the original prints.
