An autobiographical "period piece" describing the events that led to the author's meeting and work with Jung and to her becoming a committed Jungian analyst. Her memoirs then portray her childhood in southern England during World War 1, followed by four years in the hot-house of imperial India, the self-discovery and delight at achieving success as an actress and writer in London, the mixed fortunes of her first marriage and then the deep instinctive pull of her feelings for the young South African writer, Laurens van der Post whom she married in 1949. Ingaret Giffard also wrote " Sigh no More, Ladies" and a play "Because we Must" which gave Vivien Leigh her first West End part.
