This is a translation of Gierke's "Die publicistischen Lehren des Mittelalters", first published in 1881, which was a section of Volume 3 of his "Das deutsche Genossenschaftsrecht". The text includes an introduction by Maitland who undertook the translation to support his distinction between the concept of trust and what was known as legal corporation. The book is part of Thoemmes' "Key Texts" series which are facsimile paperback editions of books which have been unavailable. The series gives particular emphasis to less popularized works of major thinkers in the history of ideas. Classic monographs are also featured.
