This work states that African slaves and slave owners played a central role both in the expansion of slavery and the reform of servile relationships.
Local elites resisted, diverted and appropriated metropolitan attempts to end or restrict access to and control of slaves. At the same time slaves were able to liberate themselves and take part in mass emancipations. The situationwas transformed by the introduction of new economic opportunities and politicisation and social change among slaves themselves.

Rezensionen / Stimmen
Getz's work is based on an impressive range of national archival sources (British, French, Ghanaian and Senegalese) and missionary records (e.g. Catholic missions, Basel mission and the Wesleyan Methodist mission). In addition, the author integrates his secondary sources into his primary-source-based narrative in an effective and informative way. He provides the reader with an insightful analysis that incorporates other viewpoints and interpretations and, at the same time, offers a synthesis that gives an overview of the relevant historiography. Well written and engaging in its narrative style, this study can be heartily recommended as an important contribution to West African historical scholarship as well as to related fields of study. - -- Ray A Kea * THE HISTORIAN *
