This book describes the ignored and obscured importance of women in the progressive movements of the 19th century. It includes the role women played in the Female Political Union of Manchester, in the massacre of Peterloo, in the struggle for freedom of the press, in the radical printing and publishing movement, over the People's Charter and over the Irish Question. Ruth and Edmund Frow founded the Working Class Movement Library in Manchester. Previously they were active Trade Unionists, she in the National Union of Teachers, he in the Amalgamated Engineering Union.
