Important changes have taken place in world production and consumption of potatoes during the last 20 to 30 years. This paper discusses the technical and scientific progress that has been made in the fields of potato breeding, production and protection. Since the potato became an important commercial crop in Europe in the 19th century there has been interest in new methods that would improve yield. This paper draws attention to the high potential productivity of the potato crop and the development possibilities available.
