The periodic occurrence of loss of tree vigour, branch dieback and tree mortality is a phenomenon which has frustrated resource managers and intrigued scientists for many years. Most cases of decline have been reported from North America, Australia and the Pacific Region. However decline is by no means restricted to these regions. This publication provides an overview of declines and diebacks in a global context. Similarities and differences between decline events are examined, as are the mechanisms which are believed to cause decline.
