Recent advances in the field of molecular and developmental biology, genetics, immunology and obstetrics have led to a greater understanding of the pathological mechanisms responsible for foetal and neonatal disease and abnormalities. The book deals with pathological mechanisms as they affect development. It is not intended to provide a systemative coverage of anatomical pathology of the foetal, neonatal and childhood periods, but rather to illustrate the mechanisms by which abnormalities or disease states occur. Accounts are given of important processes during normal development and growth. The pathology of the placenta, as it affects the dependent foetus is also discussed, but the bulk of the volume studies abnormal development processes, their relationship to embryology and to the causation of disease states. The text deals with the pathology of different development states: fertilization, cleavage, primary organisms, the formation of the germ layers, mechanisms affecting organogenesis and growth and abnormalities of terminal differential of cell function.
Childhood tumours are viewed as abnormal embryonic growth and differentiation and their relationship to teratology is discussed.
