Five Centuries of Choral Music

On March 29, 1986 Howard Swan celebrated his eightieth birthday 1986 also marked the forty-ninth year of Howard's teaching career. All of the contributors have been touched by that career, some many times over many years. Threeof us, the present writer included, were so enriched by our experiences with Howard at Occidental College that we became university choral conductors ourselves, after graduating with degrees in English, economics, and political science. Such is the strength of his inspiration and personal example.
Robert Shaw's words of dedication speak eloquently for all of us. We wish to add only the hope that this volume might permit us to return in some smallmeasure what we have received.
