Elizabeth FitzGerald was a daughter of Major Charles Fleetwood-Hesketh of Stockton Hall, Rutland (England). In 1936 she married Brian FitzGerald, a direct descendant of Lord Kildare, who wrote a number of books on the FitzGeralds. In his work he was helped by Elizabeth who realised there was an interesting story to write about Lord Kildare's Grand Tour. She researched "Grand Tours" generally and produced a linking narrative for Kildare's letters. Elizabeth died in 1991, leaving all her papers to her brother-in-law, Denis FitzGerald, who lives in Waterford. He showed her typescript to Molly Keane who asked to write an introduction, the last thing she wrote before her death.
