Reforestation, fuelwood production, soil management, and livestock production on the semi-arid and arid lands are recognized as a major world political and humanitarian issue. The scientific and development solutions required to resolve these problems lack reliable data bases and validated theoretical frameworks. This symposium was organized because of the need to enhance collaboration between semi-arid researchers working throughout the world on similar genera in very similar climatic regions, yet who knew very little about each others' research programs. This symposium attracted participants from 20 countries, including Latin America, The Caribbean, French and English speaking Africa, Israel, India and Australia.
