This is a story about Rachael and Rachel; Rachael who, widowed by the First World War, finds herself sexually obsessed by a young gigolo who in turn is obsessively in love with her; and Rachel, who has given birth to a baby with a hole in his heart. Gradually Rachel understands the spirits who haunt her and realises she will never be able to allow herself to love her baby and allow him the operation that will save his life until she can free herself of the ghosts of the past.
