When Sir Matt Busby died early in 1994 at the age of 85, over 50,000 people turned out in Manchester to mourn him. On the following Saturday every spectator at league matches throughout Britain held a minutes silence as hardened Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool fans showed their respect for the man who created the team that beat them all. Sir Matt Busby engendered respect and committment . He created the legendary Busby Babes, a youthful team of talented young men who inspired the dull post-war England to self-confidence and pride as they conquered the footballing world. On February 6th 1956 half of Busby's Manchester United team were killed in the Munich air crash. Busby was given the last rites twice but survived to rebuild his team against all odds and went on to win more championships and medals and inspire a whole new team.
