The steel industries that were audited in the Ukraine and Russia, for this publication, consume 20-30 per cent more energy than those in Western Europe. This is largely due to the type and the age of the technology used. For example, in the Ukraine an estimated 60 per cent of steel is produced in open-hearth furnaces which are inefficient and highly polluting. In Western steel production furnaces of this type are no longer used, as industry has invested in new, more efficient and cleaner technologies. This guide identifies ways to save up to 10 per cent across the whole steel industry through improvements to existing technologies and changing work practices.
